Retinoids are natural compounds derived from vitamin a, and they treat brown spots and superficial wrinkles. Topical creams containing the retinoids are highly effective . When used regularly they reduce fine wrinkles and clear up mottled pigmentation and Rough skin. You start seeing some changes within six weeks, but it takes up to 6 months for substantial improvement. Retinoids penetrate deep into skin and they stimulate cell division. They help in repairing the top layer of skin and enhancing the production of collagen, a protein that makes skin supple.
However they increase the penetration of ultraviolet radiation, so they should be used only at night. As they do not contain any sun blockers, wash your face and apply sunblock before you go out of the house next morning.
One of the best ways to prevent skin damage is to apply sunscreen daily. Sunscreen does not reverse wrinkles or spots caused by the sun but when used consistently it helps reduce further damage. Apply sunscreen to exposed skin( SPF 15 or higher) the whole year. Apply even if it is cloudy or raining. If you use a face moisturiser with blockers, a teaspoon will do the job. Avoid going outdoors between 11 AM and 4 PM. Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before you start and protect yourself with an umbrella.
