Hearing loss

08 Oct

Innumerable middle aged and older people have some kind of hearing loss, and many are unaware of it. There is no need to despair as many ways are on the upswing, to preserve hearing. New technology has led to improved hearing devices and miraculous new implant procedures.
Genius do not carry all the blame for hearing loss, there are also other factors like wax build-up, infections, tumours, head injuries, chronic conditions and medicines. The modern world culprit is the incessant din of stereos, sirens, jackhammers, and vehicles. The world has become a noisy place and our hearing is paying for it. Our ears are designed to hear at a low sound pressure, that is, at low levels of sound. When the pressure gets too high, the sensory cells inside the ear have no choice but to vibrate, and when they vibrate too much they fall apart.
However, as we age, the sensory cells die off-sometimes by trauma, sometimes by genetic design. Either way, once a cell is gone, it is never replaced. And the more you lose, the less you hear. A study on aging, hearing changes, particularly in the higher frequencies, begin in men as early as age 30 and in women around age 50. It has been known for a long time that the hearing sensitivity of men is poorer than that of women.
