Eat food that appeals to your palate, but remember to include balanced amounts of protein, fats, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins in your daily intake. Drink lots of water, it keeps you hydrated and eliminates toxins. Include foods like omega-3 fatty acids (good for heart and brain), soy bean (provides protein), and high-fibre foods in your diet.
Protect yourself by cutting down on fats, especially saturated fats (found mainly in animal products), full fat dairy products and the white fat on meat. Diets high in fat can lead to hardened, narrowed arteries. When the heart has to work harder to get the blood round the body because of this, you are at risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
Eating too much salt has been linked to higher than average blood pressure, which may lead to an increased risk of heart disease or stroke. And salt is present naturally in foods and is also used as a flavouring or preservative. Avoid adding salt to your food at the table and cut down on salt in cooking wherever possible. Most of our salt intake comes from processed foods, eating less of processed foods and more fresh food is a good way to stay healthy.
Our body requires sugar for energy. Here again moderation is advised. Brown sugar is better than white. The sugar we get from the fruits we eat is enough for our body.
