Stroke

01 Sep

stroke_hemorrhage1Stroke or brain attack is India’s fourth leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability. Although most stroke victims are older, nearly one third are below the age of 50. They include adolescents and even children. Public awareness is much less despite hundreds of thousands of deaths due to stroke. Many lives can be saved if more people recognised the following warning signs:
Difficulty in speaking or understanding even simple sentences; sudden weakness, numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg; sudden dimness or loss of vision, particularly in one eye; an episode of double vision; or a sensation of shade descending over the line of sight; a sudden, severe headache; temporary dizziness or loss of balance or coordination, especially if occurring along with one of the other warning signs.
Anyone who has the symptoms of a stroke should be immediately taken to a major hospital, preferably one with a stroke team. About 75% of strokes are ischemic-caused by clotted blood that obstructs circulation. A thrombotic stroke occurs when a blood clot forms in an artery in the brain or neck. And embolic stroke occurs when a small clot known as NM Boulez forms elsewhere in the body, if carried through the bloodstream into arteries within or leading to the brain, and lodges there. There is another stroke called haemorrhagic stroke, which is caused when a weakened or defective artery in the brain bursts, cutting off blood flow to some cells while damaging others by direct pressure from the bleeding. 30% of haemorrhagic stroke patients die, compared with 10% of ischemic stroke patients.
